IT systems form the engine of innovation for Industrie 4.0. The use of cyber-physical IT systems at all levels of the production is the decisive factor to implement the innovative concept of the agile multi-adaptive smart factory. Changing qualitative and quantitative market demands today require a fast response from manufacturing companies. Therefore, production and logistics processes are subject to permanent change. Both in the consumer and capital goods increasingly individual customer requirements must be taken into account.
The production and logistics processes must meet these requirements dynamically and overcome strong, unpredictable fluctuations in demand, and support shorter product life cycles. Increasing flexibility in production has been a much discussed field and often been addressed from a purely manufacturing standpoint for decades. With the use of cyber-physical production systems for the creation of “Smart Factories”, as they are aimed at future project Industrie 4.0, however, undergoing a paradigm shift in the production logic. Due to the intensive use of high-networked sensors and actuators, overcoming traditional production hierarchies of central control towards decentralized self-organization and fine-grained control, but also the systematic consideration of versatile production units already in the system design to the medium reached a strong reduction of the replacement costs for the market required flexibility in the production of premium products in a smart factory.
