IT sys­tems form the engine of inno­va­tion for Indus­trie 4.0. The use of cyber-physical IT sys­tems at all levels of the pro­duc­tion is the decisive fac­tor to imple­ment the inno­va­tive con­cept of the agile multi-adaptive smart fac­tory. Chan­ging qua­li­ta­tive and quan­ti­ta­tive mar­ket demands today require a fast response from manu­fac­tu­ring com­pa­nies. The­re­fore, pro­duc­tion and logistics pro­ces­ses are sub­ject to per­ma­nent change. Both in the con­su­mer and capi­tal goods incre­a­sin­gly indi­vi­dual cust­o­mer requi­re­ments must be taken into account.

The pro­duc­tion and logistics pro­ces­ses must meet these requi­re­ments dyna­mi­cally and over­come strong, unpre­dic­ta­ble fluc­tua­ti­ons in demand, and sup­port shor­ter pro­duct life cycles. Incre­a­sing fle­xi­bi­lity in pro­duc­tion has been a much dis­cus­sed field and often been addres­sed from a purely manu­fac­tu­ring stand­point for deca­des. With the use of cyber-physical pro­duc­tion sys­tems for the crea­tion of “Smart Fac­to­ries”, as they are aimed at future pro­ject Indus­trie 4.0, howe­ver, under­go­ing a para­digm shift in the pro­duc­tion logic. Due to the inten­sive use of high-networked sen­sors and actua­tors, over­co­m­ing tra­di­tio­nal pro­duc­tion hier­ar­chies of cen­tral con­trol towards decen­tra­li­zed self-organization and fine-grained con­trol, but also the sys­te­ma­tic con­side­ra­tion of ver­sa­tile pro­duc­tion units alre­ady in the sys­tem design to the medium reached a strong reduc­tion of the repla­ce­ment costs for the mar­ket requi­red fle­xi­bi­lity in the pro­duc­tion of pre­mium pro­ducts in a smart factory.
